Blogger's Quilt Festival: Fall 2012

Blogger's Quilt Festival: Fall 2012

You know it. You love it. It's the online Blogger's Quilt Festival.
I'm a little disappointed this time around, in that I went back to work 4 weeks ago and have barely sewn a thing since! So, I'm pulling out my Seaside Avocados Quilt that I made back in June to not only share, but to also tell you what I did wrong.
Seaside Avocados is supposed to be a transparency quilt. When the lime green 'orb' blends with the peacock blue rectangle, the colors combine to create a candy green orb (Fabric by Kona Cotton), thus creating a transparent effect. Additionally, the green rectangle in the center is a yellow-green on the lime side and a blue-green on the peacock side, hence the two shades. (Wow, I just used 'thus' and 'hence' in one paragraph.)
I used a free color blending app on my iPad because I wanted the colors to reflect reality. So in reality, yes, those two colors really do blend to create the candy green. But, as I now stand back and look at it...my eye really wants a darker shade. See the block on the right? I doctored it up and yeah, my eye likes it. I can feel the transparency.
So, while I didn't give me the effect I wanted, I still love this quilt and I've learned what to do (and not do) the next time around.
I'm going to savor my time between work and dinner and check out the quilts in the festival. Click the icon below to take you there!
