When Amanda first asked me to participate in her Tuesday Tips series, I didn't hesitate to say yes. But, as I hit send on my reply email I thought...hmmmm...a tip? I don't have any tips. I do everything the hard way. Seriously, I do. I don't even have a gadget to share, because I never buy gadgets or tools or anything that makes the process easier, again...because I do it the hard way.
Then, I remembered this binding tip that changed my life. I'd made a bunch of quilts before I discovered it and even then it was by accident. The tutorials I'd seen just hadn't spelled it out for me and honestly, sometimes I just need it spelled out.
So, I had The Tip in mind and I was just waiting for the end of the work week to get it done. When Friday came around, I realized that I could really use a quilt to demonstrate on. You know, it just seemed more authentic. Of course, I don't have a quilt in the works so I called my mom. Nope, she didn't either. Well, I knew I had some fabric for a couple of whole cloth quilts that I just hadn't been able to get to. Perfect! That'll only take a couple hours to quilt up.
So, after Saturday morning Christmas choir rehearsal and lunch, I went to town on this quilt and quilted it in an hour-and-a-half! Whole cloth quilts are amazing to quilt on. They lie flat and stay flat, and the quilting goes so smoothly.
I then started to cut my binding and that's when it hit me! I really don't want to demonstrate The Tip with a striped binding, because The Tip involves a diagonal seam and sometimes, I don't want to do that with a stripe. You can, but people are particular about how they handle stripes.
So, Sunday came and brought just enough snow and slickness that I stayed home and quilted up Demo Quilt #2.
Of course, then I realized that I'd used up the polka-dot fabric I was going to use for binding in another quilt. Luckily, I alway have black and white polka-dot fabric on hand.
So, while it felt like my weekend was a bit of a fiasco...I got two quilts quilted! Now I can sit and enjoy a movie while I hand-stitch the binding.
